What We Regret Most: A Novel

Two rivals face their fears—and each other—in this widely celebrated debut novel.

Thirty-two-year-old Avishag Fishman is happily married, up for a coveted promotion at work, and in the middle of fertility treatments with her husband. She is also a well-trained Mossad field agent, but she never thought the two contradicted each other—no matter what everyone else insists on telling her.

Gal Weiss knows he has the promotion in his pocket. After all, he’s charming, capable, and effective—a ruthless combination for any Mossad agent. In fact, the only thing standing between Weiss and his ideal life is his overly ambitious division partner, Avishag.

Her, and the routine lie-detector tests he keeps failing.

When Avishag and Weiss are sent to Rome, they know their every move is being closely watched—not by their targets, but by their superiors. Then things start Avishag is forced to confront her tense relationship with her husband. Gal’s bubbling secret threatens to ruin everything he ever wanted. And when reality finally catches up to them like a ticking time bomb, can both Weiss and Avishag choose between the life they want—and the life they will regret most?

Like the characters that tie its story together, What We Regret Most is a fast-paced, gripping, elegant, high-stakes literary achievement by debut author Noa Shalev.
