Her small kingdom, a miserable cluster of barren islands, is slowly dying and her husband, Patmos, is a king with no real power or wealth.

Driven by grief, desperation and the isolation of her existence, Melanthea strikes a sinister bargain with Umro, a mysterious hermitess witch, but the cost of their deal will be greater than the queen could ever realize.
