The Draft Day Secret

One night lead to a secret that changes everything.

Six years ago, I spent an unforgettable night with cocky first-round draft pick Ryan McKenzie. By morning, he was gone—off to his NHL dreams while I was left with a positive pregnancy test and a broken heart.

Now he's back in Boston, traded to the Blazers, and standing in my rink where I work. Where our son—his son—practices. The same son who worships his favorite player without knowing it's his father.

I should tell Ryan to leave. Instead, I'm watching him teach our boy to skate backward. Letting him read bedtime stories. Pretending my heart doesn't race every time he looks at me like he never stopped searching.

The rules were co-parent politely, keep the media away from Chase, don't fall in love again.

But Ryan McKenzie never did follow the rules.

And when he's sitting on my living room floor building Legos with our son, promising he's here to stay, I start to wonder if maybe second chances are worth the risk.

Even if the first one nearly broke me.
