Secrets hide in Avril Ashton’s past—secrets not even she knows.

Death lingers in the sea, and war against the Merfolk keeps travelers from wandering beyond Albian’s shores. Yet Avril has always felt a pull from the one place she is forbidden to go: the ocean. Needed by everyone, valued by no one, and ignoring the call of the sea, Avril sets to melding into the background of her younger sister’s home.

But when an old flame resurfaces eight years later, courting another, her life is turned upside-down. Hal Wycliffe is a calculative, renowned captain, leading Albian in the war. Now that he’s on leave, Avril has to decide whether to pursue her first love again or let go of him forever.

Underneath dinner parties and drama, the Merfolk’s threat continues, but even Avril hasn’t realized how close the danger is. Interwoven is a political conspiracy, an unending war, and a hidden identity, as Avril must uncover one secret at a time if she is to repair herself in Hal’s eyes and answer the ocean’s true call: Who are you?
