The Present We Risk: A Special Agent Riley Reynolds Mystery

Special Agent Riley Reynolds has spent her life relying on one person. Herself. Recovering from the injuries that nearly cost her everything has forced her to depend on her new partner, Jackson Bennett, in ways she’s never been comfortable with. Now cleared to return to the field, Riley is determined to prove she is once again capable of doing her job.

Her first assignment back appears routine: investigate the late-night car crash that claimed the life of a sealed federal witness set to testify in a major upcoming trial. But the autopsy tells a different story. The victim didn’t die in the crash.

Riley and Jackson refuse to take the investigation at face value. They dig deeper and uncover a chilling pattern. One witness is dead. Another has already survived an attack. A third may be a sitting target. Someone knows exactly who the witnesses are. And they’re trying to prevent their testimony. With the trial only weeks away, and leads in short supply, every answer raises a more dangerous question.

As Riley works to uncover who is targeting the witnesses, the person she has come to rely on becomes the one person who might change everything. When Jackson finally confesses his feelings, Riley must decide whether she can risk opening her heart, or if protecting herself is more important than the possibility of something real.

And as the truth gets closer, Riley must decide if the careful emotional walls she’s spent years building to protect herself are the same ones keeping her from the life she wants.
