Overview
AN ABSOLUTELY THRILLING CRIME MYSTERY SET IN WEXFORD.

When Janet Lefroy doesn’t open up on Tuesday morning, her assistant calls the Gardaí.

Detective Inspector Vikki Kirkby has the door taken off its hinges. Upstairs in the flat above the building society, Janet is face down on her bed in pink floral pyjamas, hands still gripping the corners of the quilt, the blood around her long dry.

The doors were locked. The alarm was set. Neither had been touched.

But the safe downstairs is empty. And Janet Lefroy, it turns out, was a great deal more interesting than a branch manager ought to be.

Days later, a cottage outside Murntown burns to the ground with a woman inside it — a woman who had been coming into Janet’s office for months, and taking her to lunch.

Two deaths, no connection anyone can see, and a branch manager whose life doesn’t add up.

Then the only witness Kirkby has left stops answering her phone, and a demand for money arrives.

At midnight, on the wet sand at Tramore, fifty thousand euro in used notes is left on an empty beach. Kirkby lies in the dark on the higher ground and waits to see who comes for it . . .

A gripping and atmospheric Irish police procedural set on the south-east coast of Ireland.

Perfect for fans of Peter May, Ann Cleeves, Joy Ellis and Helen H. Durrant.

Please note, this was previously published as THE EMPTY SAFE MYSTERY.

THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Vikki Kirkby — Tall, dark-haired and in her late thirties, Vikki Kirkby was a rising star of the Dublin force until a senior colleague’s mistake was quietly laid at her door. She left the county at nineteen to join the Gardaí against her father’s wishes, and the rift never entirely healed, so coming back as an exile is not the homecoming she would have chosen. Patient, thorough and quietly stubborn, she won’t take the obvious answer just because it’s the convenient one — the very quality that made her inconvenient in Dublin. New colleagues learn quickly that she is never to be called ‘ma’am’. But the brisk manner is mostly for show, and beneath it is a fair-minded officer with a dry turn of phrase and a point to prove.

THE SETTING
County Wexford — An old town at the mouth of the river Slaney, founded by the Vikings and known now for its wide sandy beaches and its world-famous autumn opera festival. But away from the town the county turns quickly into narrow roads and high hedgerows, isolated bungalows down unmarked lanes where everyone knows everyone else’s business. Out on the Hook Peninsula, a shotgun going off in a kitchen may not be heard at all. And below it all lies Rosslare Europort, working through the night as the ferries come in from Fishguard and France — a gateway through which a great deal passes, and not all of it declared.
