Overview
The Earth Crawler by Peyman Esmaeili is an ambitious and suspenseful novel set against a world shaped by history, myth, political intrigue, and social upheaval.
The story begins with the mysterious death of Elias Sassoon, a Jewish merchant in Hong Kong. His death soon becomes connected to the vast networks of the global opium trade, corruption, and the struggle for power. At the center of another strand of the story is Ismail, a Muslim adopted son with an uncertain past and a dangerous ability to see the future. He is sent to Isfahan, a city suffering from famine, cholera, administrative corruption, and the breakdown of social trust.
In Kermanshah, Shahbaz, an apprentice to a book restorer, discovers a mysterious book known as Laak, a legendary text said to possess powers beyond those of ordinary human beings. Meanwhile, in Sanandaj, Ayoub, a mysterious half-human, half-angelic agent, is drawn into the conflict surrounding rebellions and political conspiracies.
As these seemingly separate stories unfold, their paths gradually converge in Isfahan, where historical reality and myth begin to blur. Beneath the city, something immense stirs in the qanats, while the earth itself seems to become an unpredictable force.
Blending historical fiction, mythology, and elements of the supernatural, Laak: The Earth Crawler explores power, corruption, survival, and humanity's uneasy relationship with forces beyond its control.
