Sbírka Balady a romance z roku 1883 je dílem představujícím Nerudův příklon k lidové poezii. Název nastiňuje žánrové ladění sbírky, avšak Neruda zvolil netradiční pohled a obvyklá schémata útvarů balady a romance často narušuje. S klasickým tragickým koncem balad se tu proto setkáme jen zřídka. Sbírku prostupuje tematika zejména z oblasti náboženství, legend, rodinných vztahů a historie českého národa.
